Updates of medical and dental information are to be performed utilizing our online questionnaires. This is to reduce interaction between patients and time spent in the reception area.

Welcome to Coastal Periodontics
Welcome to my practice. My name is Dr Kathleen Bourke, BDSc (QLD), MDSc in Periodontics (QLD). I graduated as a dentist from Queensland University (UQ) in 1991 and worked as a RAAF Dental Officer. In 1999 I completed the 3 year Periodontal Masters Course UQ) and moved to Canberra, where I worked as a periodontist, both in the RAAF and in private practice. In 2005, I felt it was time to return to the Queensland to be closer to my family and thaw out. I am committed to providing quality care to you and your referring dentist.
What is a Periodontist?
A periodontist is a dentist who specialises in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of periodontal disease, functional and aesthetic gum surgery and in the placement of dental implants. Periodontists are also experts in the treatment of oral inflammation.
Periodontists receive extensive training in these areas, including three additional years of education beyond dental school. They are familiar with the latest techniques for diagnosing and treating periodontal disease and are also trained in performing cosmetic periodontal procedures.

What is Periodontal disease?
Periodontal disease is a chronic disease that involves the loss of the anchoring bone and soft tissue around your teeth. Without treatment, you can lose your teeth and it can affect your overall health. Studies are now showing a link between periodontitis and an increased risk of heart disease and for women and an increased risk of pre-term births and low birth weight babies.
A good website to read more about periodontal disease is www.perio.org.
To maintain your overall dental health, it is important that you maintain at least a yearly examination with your dentist even when you are undergoing specialist gum treatment.
