Are You a First Time Visitor?
In order to optimise your treatment time, please complete the Consultation Form that includes the required medical history below. Please ensure that this has been sent to the team at Coastal Periodontics at least one-week prior to your first scheduled appointment. This information is vital to provide you with the most effective and safe treatment.
Antibiotics: If your medical practitioner or medical specialist advised you that your medical condition or joint replacement requires antibiotic coverage prior to dental appointments, then they must be taken prior to a periodontal consultation and or treatment. If the antibiotics were not taken as advised then the examination cannot occur.
Dr Bourke is a Dental Specialist in the field of Periodontics who treats patients with severe gum disease and problems using a range of surgical and non-surgical procedures.
Before your first appointment, Dr Bourke will review your Consultation Form which includes Medical History to determine what may affect your gum disease. It is extremely important for Dr Bourke – and any dental professional – to know if any medication, herbs, supplements and vitamins are being taken, and if you, the patient, are being treated for any condition that can affect periodontic care. This includes surgery, radiographs, heart disease, hip replacements, blood thinning medication, diabetes or pregnancy.
A number of examinations will be conducted during your first appointment. Dr Bourke will examine your gums to see if there is any root surface exposure, gum line recession, check to see if any teeth are loose and any factors which will impact on your gum disease and treatment. To do this, a small measuring instrument will be placed between your teeth and gums to determine the depth of any deep spaces – known as periodontal pockets. Radiographs (X-rays) may also be taken in order to observe the level of bone support for your teeth. This information will assist Dr Bourke and provide her with essential information on the health of your gums and what treatment is best for you.
As more patients are exhibiting signs of periodontal disease – coupled with research that suggests a relationship between periodontal disease and other chronic diseases of aging – an increased level of expertise and understanding supplied by a qualified specialist will be better. Patients with moderate or severe levels of periodontal disease – or have early signs of vulnerability of periodontal disease – will be best managed by a partnership between a dentist and a periodontist. However, a general dentist may be able to manage some patients’ periodontal needs if the case is slight or slow in nature.
